So I guess my answer is that I somewhat prefer buck over slugs just for that, but like some others have said here, the great thing about shotguns is their versatility, and I switch between ammo types liberally as I play. With the riot shotgun, you wind up doing ~500 DPS with buckshot, and your opponents will always be on their backs. Combined with the Shotgun Surgeon perk that gives your opponents -10 DT when you use a shotgun, and there's pretty much nothing that can stop you at close range. But the And Stay Back perk gives you a 10% knockdown chance per pellet that hits someone, which means using buckshot on any enemy is a virtually guaranteed knockdown after two hits.
